Sony Computer Entertainment has broken yet another boundary in console-based gaming with the release of its newest game console, the PlayStation 3. It was produced following the success of its recent predecessor, the PlayStation 2. It belongs to the seventh generation of video game consoles competing with Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.
The Original SKUs: Playstation 3 60 Gb and 20 Gb
During its first release in Japan on November of 2006, the PlayStation 3 has had two SKUs. The first one was a basic model – PlayStation 3 20 Gb while the other one was the PlayStation 3 60 Gb. Originally, both these models have hardware backwards compatibility for PS2 games. However, in January of 2007, Sony decided that the PlayStation 3 60 Gb version will not have a hardware backwards compatibility for PS2 but instead a software emulation of P2’s hardware will provide compatibility.
Since then, a lot of revisions have been made including the release of a new slim model in 2009.
The PlayStation 3 Hardware Models
The obvious differences between the PS3 hardware models including the original ones was the number of USB ports, color of the trim, minor changes to the air vents and a presence of a flash card reader door. However, all these models come with a one or two Six axis controllers and a DualShock 3 controller.
All supporting cables are also available for all models except the Ethernet cable which are exclusive only to the 20Gb, 60 Gb and CECHExx 80 Gb models.
Although all models are equipped with software emulations to support the original PlayStation, support for PS2 backwards compatibility has diminished with the development of newer models. Also all models include an 802.11 b/g WI-Fi excluding the 20 Gb model. However, the PlayStation 3 60 Gb model was to be the only configuration to have an internal IEEE 802.11 b/g WI-fi, flash card readers (SD card, Compact Flash, Microdrive, Memory Stick/PRO/Duo) and a chrome trim.
Phasing Out The PlayStation 60 Gb Model
The Playstation 3 60 Gb has a lot of features as compared to the other PS3 hardware models. However, Sony Computer Entertainment have decided to phase out the 60Gb model in Europe. The condition is that once all remaining stocks of the 60 Gb model had been sold out, the only model available left will be the 40 Gb model.
The reason behind this phasing our of the Playstation 3 60 GB model is that Sony the 40 Gb model can be easily upgraded or improved. The firm believes that although the 40 Gb model lacks the PS2 backwards compatibility, it would less important as there will be up to 65 PS3 games coming out in the market.
As Sony advances in the world of console-gaming, they need to make revisions of their console models which includes eliminating hardware models such as the fate of the Playstation 3 60 Gb model.
