The Wii sales accelerated and overtook the combined sales figure of the Xbox and the play station, in the United States by the first half of 2007. It achieved a remarkable sales figure in its home country. The Wii sales outsold its chief competitors by a ratio of 2:1 to 6:1. The Wii sales maintained this record approximately every week, right after its release. The Wii sales created a history in the Australian history of gaming console, by achieving a record breaking sales figure. It became the most popular gaming console in a very short span of time. In an official report by the financial times on 12th of September, 2007, Wii sales overshadowed the sales figure of Xbox360. The Wii became an undeniable leader in the home console sales for its generation. It was officially accepted in the report of Enterbrain, NPD Group, and GfK. This was the first expedition of Nintendo group leading the generation’s choice and enjoying a huge sales figure. The fact that the Wii game is so much popular can be collected from the huge Wii sale figures. The game was sold instantly as soon as it arrived in the retail outlets. The demand for the Wii gaming console always remained higher than its supply. In US the Wii sales were around 6.29 million units in the year of 2007. This figure rose to 13.4 million units in the year of 2008. This figure was two million more than Xbox 360 and about double the number of PlayStation 3 units sold, as per the NPD Group. The Wii sales reached the pinnacle by selling 50 million units by the year of 2008.

The recent economic downturn hit the Wii sales by a small factor as prices of the gaming console went down. This is a major factor and the company is now targeting other demographic areas, to maintain its huge sales figure.

Nintendo games such as the Wii have carved a niche in the world of home gaming. It’s been almost two years since its launch and the popularity of the Wii seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. A major contributor to this has been the parity between the availability of newer games and the burgeoning demand for the consoles.

It never looked as if coming up with new games for the Wii was one of Nintendo’s top priorities. They were always more keen to stress on the way that their games are played and the uniqueness that lies in that. It bordered on trying to stretch the novelty value of the Nintendo games a bit too far.

Another aspect that perhaps is being neglected by Nintendo is that of supply. It’s one thing conducting a grand launch of a new game, but making sure that there are enough copies of the game in every software store across the country is another issue all together. Wii users have often complained that they have been forced to take cross-country trips in order get a copy of the latest game!
