The Gameboy DS Lite Legacy Titles That Transcend Generations
The Nintendo Game Boy and the Nintendo DS Lite are two different units. Some would even say that they are two different generations, as each has arguably defined the years that they have conquered. However, there are games that transcend both systems, so much so that, upon mentioning their titles, people forget about the dichotomy of Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo DS Lite… they just get mesmerized by the magic associated with the game. Let us call these games by a proper title.
Let us call them the Gameboy DS Lite Legacy titles.
What are these Gameboy DS Lite Legacy titles? Here are just some of them:
1. Mario platformers. On top of the list of Gameboy DS Lite Legacy titles is, of course, a Mario platform game. The first Super Mario Bros. catapulted the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to the top of every child’s (and even most adult’s) wish list. It spawned numerous sequels, most of which were ported to the Nintendo Game Boy. Come the Nintendo DS Lite, a new Super Mario Bros. game was introduced, and it instantly became one of the bestselling titles for the system.
2. Mario RPGs. Though not really an exclusive Nintendo concoction, as the original Super Mario RPG was for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was a joint collaboration between the company and Square (now Square-Enix), the series established its name as a Gameboy DS Lite Legacy title as, throughout the years, it became a property of the portables more than a property of the home consoles. With the latest game, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story set to be released in 2009, this Gameboy DS Legacy title will only be more popular.
3. Legend of Zelda. Every Legend of Zelda game that is released is a cause for a worldwide celebration. Never has a Zelda game disappointed its millions and millions of fans. And the best Zelda games can be found in portables, making this series a bona fide Gameboy DS Lite Legacy title. Watch out for the newest installment, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks that will be released in the 4th quarter of 2009.
4. Pokemon. No single property was able to revitalize the Nintendo Gameboy during, what many people believed was, its last few years than Pokemon. It is a pseudo-RPG that required players to collect pocket monsters for a variety of purposes. Pokemon became a billion dollar franchise, and its installments continue to this very day in the form of games for the Nintendo DS Lite. If there was one series that perfectly encapsulates what a Gameboy DS Lite Legacy title is all about, it’s Pokemon.
5. Metroid. Samus’ adventures began in the NES. These games were ported to the Nintendo Gameboy, and a new installment in the series even graced the portable console. The franchise evolved as a first person shooter (FPS) for the Nintendo Gamecube, and the same formula was used for the series installment for the Nintendo DS Lite. Why is such a series considered as a Gameboy DS Lite Legacy title when the portable installments were just derivatives of the games for the home consoles? Well, the Metroid name is a legend in the industry, and every release on handhelds – ports or not – is an event that should not be missed.
